CERTAIN WOMEN @LAURELHURST THEATER
またLaurelhurst Theaterに来てしまった。
日曜の夜、おなじみの最高の映画館。
最高の接客に最高のピザとビール。完璧なセッティング。
今回の目当ては"Certain Women"
彼女が「Old Joy」の監督という知人の紹介があり、即断で映画館へ行くことを決めた。
(Old Joyは愛するBonny Prince BillyことWill Oldhamが出演している)
前回とは違い、多くの人で会場が賑わっている。
この映画はシリアスな内容だから、自分で理解できるかどうか分からず少し不安になっていた。
結果から言えば、80%は理解できていない。
もし映画の内容を説明してくれ、と言われたら50文字もあれば終わってしまうだろう。
ただ、この映画は本当に素晴らしい映画だと思う。
映画は4人の女性が主人公の、短編集のような形になっている。

どこにでもありそうだけれど、たぶん誰も知らないような生活。
駄目なクライアントに引っかかってしまった弁護士や、パートナーの娘とうまくいかない女性。
お金がなくて夜間の学校の教師をやっている弁護士、、、など。
特に僕が好きだったのは、クリステン・スチュワートの出ている
田舎の夜間学校に教えに来る生徒と先生の関係を描いた話だ。
あらすじとしてはこんな感じだろうと思う。
田舎の牧場の娘をしているJamie(おそらくネイティブインディアンの家系)は、夜間の学校に通うのを楽しみにしている。
それはクリステン・スチュワート演じるBethが教えてくれるからだ。
Jamieの他は彼女よりも年配の生徒がほとんどで、話したりする相手がいないのだろう。
2人は授業のあと、ダイナーで食事をとるようになる。
Bethは豪快にハンバーガーを食べるが、Jamieはにこやかな表情で見つめるだけで、何も食べようとはしない。
その間に、Bethが遠くに住んでいて、学校に来るのに往復8時間もかけていることなどを聞かされる。
そして、Bethが学校に来なくなる日がやってくる...
この話は、朝起きる、牧場のドアを開ける、牧草を馬に与える、学校へ行く、ダイナーへ行く。家に帰る。
以上の６つのシーンがただ繰り返される構成になっている。なのになぜ、こんなに胸が締め付けられるのだろう？
一つは、Jamieの真摯な表情が挙げられる。
映像の中で、彼女はほとんどセリフがない。
ただ、優しく、何かを期待するような、期待していた何かが得られたような目線でBethを見つめている。
僕がこの話がわかりやすいと思ったのは、この視線の力にほかならない。
彼女たちの目が全てを物語っていると思ったからだ。
特にダイナーのシーン、最後に車でBethを追いかけるシーンは、言葉にし難い美しさがあった。
もう一つは、写真作品からの引用が感じられるという点。
エグルストンやアレック・ソス、スティーブン・ショア、フィリップ・ロルカ・デコルシアなどの写真作品のような目線を映像から感じた。
簡単に言えば、何気ない生活や、誰もが見過ごしているであろう風景を切り取っているというところ。
それが、映画全体の主題と、1カット1カットの共通のコンセプトとして見て取ることができる。
ダイナーや、車のフロントガラス越しのハイウェイ、夜の街角。そのどれもが美しい。
まるで既視感や単調な生活に抗うかのように、登場人物の直面する状況を美しく映し出しているかのようだった。
映画館を幸福な気持ちで後にして、今日も一日を終えた。
